We Invite You to “Think Outside the Cube”
A Zaytuna College Benefit Dinner
Zaytuna College has embarked on a journey to become the first accredited Muslim liberal arts college in the United States. Zaytuna College invites you to join co-founders Hamza Yusuf, Zaid Shakir, & Hatem Bazian for an inspirational lecture and a benefit dinner for the college. During this evening, they will share with you the highlights of Zaytuna's successes and discuss the details of our future milestones.
The generous support of the American Muslim community has been critical for Zaytuna's emergence as a thriving Muslim college in the United States. Please continue to support the college – which aims to educate and prepare future leaders for our communities, America, and the world – with your financial contributions, goodwill, and prayers.
God says in a Hadith Qudsi, “I am as My servant thinks I am.” Yet, our busy lifestyles compel us into patterns that shackle the mind. Islam is more than rituals and routine. Free yourself. Think differently. Think outside the cube. Zaytuna’s quest will, God willing, span generations, and it has only just begun. We invite you to attend the dinner reception on May 18 and endow this historic endeavor.
Zaid Shakir is amongst the most respected and influential Islamic scholars in the West. As an American Muslim who came of age during the civil rights struggles, he has brought both sensitivity about race and poverty issues and scholarly discipline to his faith-based work. Born in Berkeley, California, he accepted Islam in 1977 while serving in the United States Air Force. He obtained a BA with honors in International Relations at American University in Washington D.C. and later earned his MA in Political Science at Rutgers University. While at Rutgers, he led a successful campaign for divestment from South Africa, and co-founded New Brunswick Islamic Center formerly Masjid al-Huda.
Hamza Yusuf is an American convert to Islam who studied for several years under leading scholars in the Muslim world. He is the co-founder of Zaytuna College in California and has translated into modern English several classical Arabic texts and poems. Hamza Yusuf has been a passionate and outspoken critic of American foreign policy as well as Islamic extremist responses to those policies.
Dr. Hatem Bazian is co-founder, senior faculty, and Academic Affairs Chair at Zaytuna College. He is also a senior lecturer in the Departments of Near Eastern and Ethnic Studies at the University of California, Berkeley. Dr. Bazian is also a visiting Professor in Religious Studies at Saint Mary’s College of California and adviser to the Religion, Politics, and Globalization Center at UC Berkeley. In 2009, he founded the Center for the Study of Documentation of Islamophobia at UC Berkeley. Dr. Bazian is on the board of several organizations, including the Islamic Scholarship Fund and Muslim Americans for Palestine, for which he is also the founding president.
